SIP Calculator FAQs
What is a good SIP rate of return to assume?
Equity mutual funds have historically returned 12–15% CAGR over 10+ year periods. Debt funds return 6–8%. Balanced/hybrid funds return 9–11%. Use 10–12% for long-term equity SIP projections as a reasonable estimate.
What is the minimum SIP amount?
Most mutual funds allow SIPs starting from ₹500/month. Some funds start from ₹100/month. There is no maximum limit.
Is SIP better than lump sum investment?
SIP is generally better for most investors because it averages out purchase cost (rupee cost averaging), removes the need to time the market, and builds discipline. Lump sum may be better when markets are at a low.
Can I stop or pause my SIP?
Yes — you can pause, stop or modify your SIP amount at any time without any penalty. Pausing means no investment for that period; stopping means the invested amount stays in the fund and continues to grow.
Are SIP returns taxable?
Yes. Equity fund SIP gains held > 1 year: 10% LTCG (above ₹1.25L per year). Held < 1 year: 20% STCG. Debt fund gains (post April 2023): taxed as per income tax slab.
