IEC Registration Guide for Importers & Exporters 2026

Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit alphanumeric code issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is the primary business identification number required for all cross-border trade transactions in India.

Any person or entity wishing to import goods into India or export goods from India must obtain an IEC before their first shipment. Customs will not clear goods without a valid IEC, and banks cannot process foreign currency payments without it.
